Boarding Bites
Welcome to the Boarding Bites Podcast — Evidence for Better Boarding, where we explore the latest educational research, social trends and industry developments shaping residential education.
Each episode, we examine one topic and ask three questions:
What does the evidence say?
Why does it matter for boarding?
And what can we do differently tomorrow to build thriving residential communities?

In this episode, we explore what the evidence tells us about bullying, social exclusion and peer dynamics in boarding communities. We unpack how relational aggression, status hierarchies and emerging online influences can shape student behaviour, why belonging is one of the strongest protective factors for young people, and how boarding staff can recognise subtle warning signs before harm becomes entrenched.
We also discuss practical, evidence-informed strategies for building psychologically safe residential communities where students speak up, support one another and every adult understands their role in shaping culture.

What role does food really play in a boarding community? Far more than simply keeping students fed.
In this episode, Food in Boarding - Nourishing Health, Belonging and Performance, we explore the evidence linking nutrition to learning, sleep, mental wellbeing, physical performance and a sense of belonging. We unpack why adolescence is a critical period for healthy eating, what Australian research tells us about the nutritional habits of young people, and why boarding houses are uniquely positioned to influence lifelong health behaviours.
We also discuss practical, evidence-informed strategies that boarding teams can implement—from dining culture and student agency to supporting diverse dietary needs and creating meal environments where every student feels they belong.

Boarding schools invest significant time and resources into supporting student wellbeing through pastoral care, mental health programs and positive relationships. Yet research consistently points to one foundational factor that underpins them all: sleep.
Sleep is not simply about feeling less tired. It underpins almost every aspect of adolescent development. It shapes learning, emotional regulation, mental health, physical recovery, decision-making, relationships and behaviour. Yet during adolescence, the very biology of sleep changes. Teenagers are wired to fall asleep later, while schools and boarding houses often expect them to wake earlier. Add smartphones, busy evening schedules and shared living environments, and many boarders risk operating with a chronic sleep deficit.
Are our evening routines helping students wind down, or keeping their brains switched on?
Do our expectations around prep, devices and lights out reflect what we know about adolescent development?
And are we treating sleep as a personal responsibility, when it may actually be a whole-of-house responsibility?
In this episode, we explore Sleep: The Most Powerful Boarding Intervention? We'll examine what the evidence tells us about adolescent sleep, circadian rhythms, brain development and technology, why sleep may be one of the strongest predictors of learning, wellbeing and behaviour in boarding, and how boarding houses can make small, evidence-informed changes that help students wake each day ready to learn, connect and thrive.

Student voice in boarding is often associated with prefects, student committees or the occasional survey. However, student voice is not simply about providing opportunities for students to speak. It is about creating residential communities where students genuinely believe they can influence the place where they live. When young people experience authentic agency, they develop a stronger sense of belonging, greater responsibility for their community, and deeper engagement with boarding life.
But in an era where connection and belonging are increasingly challenged, how do we create boarding environments where students feel heard, valued, and empowered to contribute?
In this episode, we explore Student Voice in Boarding: Building Agency, Leadership and Belonging. We'll examine how boarding houses can create authentic opportunities for participation, develop meaningful student leadership, and foster cultures where young people are not simply cared for, but are active partners in creating communities in which everyone can thrive.

We examine what the evidence tells us about disability inclusion, why belonging and agency matter so deeply, and how boarding houses can create environments where difference is recognised, valued, and celebrated as an essential part of a thriving residential community. Rather than asking students to adapt to boarding, we explore how boarding can be designed to support every student with dignity, inclusion, and genuine opportunities to belong and flourish.
